College students can accumulate a significant burden of debt through student loans. Alisa's Angels Foundation helps our scholarship recipients by providing them loans at 1%.
The goal of this program is to help students complete their education by providing access to additional funds without the accompanying financial burden often associated with student loans. The terms of the loan are simple - 1% a year, beginning after the scheduled graduation date.
With this "pay it forward" approach, we provide support throughout their education. Repayments from the loans are then used to help the next generation of recipients.
Renee is a PhD candidate at the University of Michigan, studying Cell and Developmental Biology and Bioinformatics.
Diagnosed as a young girl with juvenile diabetes, she focused on helping other children adjust to life-changing illnesses.
Her experience has inspired her studies, and she is now deciding where to focus her graduate work, looking at options such as researching methods to help repair adult muscles, or improved diabetes treatment.
Renee is excited for the opportunities ahead, “I am not sure which project I will spend the next five years working on, but I know any of them will be exciting and will make a big difference for many people in this world.”
