College students can accumulate a significant burden of debt through student loans. Alisa's Angels Foundation helps our scholarship recipients by providing them loans at 1%.
The goal of this program is to help students complete their education by providing access to additional funds, without the accompanying financial burden often associated with student loans. The terms of the loan are simple - 1% a year, beginning after the scheduled graduation date.
With this "pay it forward" approach, we provide support throughout their education. Repayments from the loans are then used to help the next generation of recipients.
When I was 13 years old, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Learning how to manage my disease wasn’t the hard part. What was hard was accepting that Type 1 Diabetes was now part of me, forever. The hospital was wonderful bringing me back to health, but they weren’t so great at making me feel…okay.
This experience inspired me to join a group of teens at the University of Arizona Medical Center (now Banner) who wanted to make the hospital a more friendly and comfortable place.
I have continued this passion through a PhD program at the University of Michigan Medical School where I work full-time on research. As I continue down this path, I am more confident each day that
this is how I can make the biggest impact in my community and in the world.
